Obviously, the main objective of backgammon is to clear off all checkers from the board faster than your opponent. There are two basic ways to set up a point, either through slotting or by rolling a double.
Slotting can be risky. It involves moving a checker into a desired point on the board and then following it up by placing another checker on top of it with your next roll. While the tactic may be faster than waiting for a double roll, it's also risky because you take the risk of putting your checker on the center bar with your opponent's next roll.
Rolling a double with the dice is the best way to make points, as slotting can leave your checkers in a very vulnerable position, forcing you to change your strategy mid-game.
